Carron Turlough Loop Walk
A Guided Walk of Carron Turlough in North Clare
The largest disappearing lake in Ireland
We will start & finish this looped walk in ‘Carron’, the only village in the Burren uplands. A Turlough is otherwise known as a disappearing lake – is a most unusual phenomenon. What happens is the water fills on a limestone depression over Winter and literally disappears to a dust bowl during the Summer months!
This walk is considered a reasonably easy 5km stretch all on roadway. It is rich in native flowers & fauna, picturesque views including the remains of an O’Loughlin’s Castle, a Herdsman cottage & much more.
Just outside this village is the birth place of Michael Cusack -founder of the GAA. The Gaelic Athletic Association was of tremendous importance in the formation of our National and Cultural identity. A visit to his home place is a highly recommended addition to this day.
